Gettin' Spoiled!

I've discovered people really like to spoil you when you're having your first baby. The book club I'm in charge of at work conspired with my co-workers and Matt to throw me a surprise baby shower at the store. It was very successful...I had no idea what they were up to. Though I guess I had plenty of opportunities to figure it out. It all started when book club was moved to a Wednesday night (May 26) and I was originally only scheduled to work till three that afternoon (book club is at 6:30). One of my co-workers asked if I could switch shifts and work till closing so she could do diagnostics for her Master Gardening group (which turned out to be a fake excuse :)). I told her that I had actually scheduled some visiting teaching interviews for that night and wasn't planning on going to book club and was hoping Isa, my boss, who runs the club with me would be okay with doing it on her own that night. Isa was right there and said pretty abruptly that she was not going to be there for club and I would have to be there to cover it. My first though was "oh crap, I'm supposed to do these interviews!" But I was in charge of this club so I figured I was stuck and would have to rely on my counselors to do the interviews.

So the day of book club arrived and at 5:40 Matt called the store and asked me if I could do a HUGE favor for him. His motorcycle wouldn't start and all of his co-workers had already left so he was stranded at work. He wondered if I would be able to leave work for a few minutes to come pick him up. We were having kind of a slow night so I knew my co-worker, Emma could handle me being gone for a few minutes so I agreed. When I picked Matt up he said he knew what the problem was with his bike and all he needed was one little tool at the house. So he asked me if I could drop him off at the house really quick and bring him back. That was fine with me, but when we got to the house I noticed Matt was taking his time walking into the house and even took the time to check what letters were in the mail. All the while I'm thinking "man, if I had asked Matt to leave work to come pick me up, I would be running in and out of the house as quickly as possible." So I started to get a little ancy because I still needed to get back to the store and get ready for book club. In the end I got back to the store at 6:00 so I had plenty of time to set up, but when I walked in the store, Emma was setting up a table with food on it. The first thing that ran through my head was "oh no, who planned another event at the store at the same time as my book club?!" So I asked Emma what she was setting up for and she said "It's your baby shower!!" Then Isa (who was supposed to be gone that night) walked out of her office and I realized what was going on. The funny thing was that it took me a few moments to realize that Matt was in on the whole thing and his motorcycle wasn't really broken down.

Isa was hoping Matt could keep me out of the store later than 6:00 so all the book club members and my co-workers could all be at the store to say "SURPRISE!" but in the end there was no way Matt would have been able to keep me away any longer since I knew I needed to get back for book club. But it was still a big surprise to me...I had no idea, whatsoever, that they were planning this party for me. I felt pretty special and spoiled :)

Then last Friday, Matt's co-workers threw us a baby shower also! Baby showers are so fun! People give the cutest things! Plus I think they are extra generous when it's your first baby.

I still have one more baby shower to look forward to...the family baby shower is at the end of the month (let's hope Jude doesn't decide to come three weeks early or else I don't think we'll make it to the shower!!)
